bathroom decor - shower curtains

Shower curtains come in all types and are used in bathtubs with a shower or shower enclosures. They are usually made from vinyl, cloth or plastic. The shower curtain has two main purposes: to provide privacy and to prevent water from flooding or spraying into the bathroom.

Shower curtains usually surround the bath inside the tub or shower area, and are held up with railings or curtain rods on the ceiling. To accommodate the different types of bathtub shapes, railings can come in different sizes and are flexible in their design. Some people use two shower curtains: one that is inside the tub, which is mainly functional or decorative as well, and an outer shower curtain, which is purely decorative. -Wiki

Bathroom decor trends 2011

Style at home reports:
No room in the home gets as much tough love as the bathroom. Water splashes all over the tub and shower surround, sometimes all over the floor, too. Cosmetics and toothpaste sprinkle the sink. Yet we rely on this space beyond function; it can be a place to find some respite from everyday life. The bathroom is where we take a long shower before a challenging day, or soak in the tub after an exhausting one. So it's worth having a space that makes you smile. Here, Canadian designers tell us how to do just that with their top picks for bathroom trends of 2011.

Bathroom decor trends 2011
"Soothing, tranquil bathrooms continue to be on trend. To achieve this, you're looking at using a soothing colour palette and containing the clutter with streamlined vanities."
Lisa Canning, Lisa Canning Interiors, Toronto

"Warm grey neutrals with the addition of white will lend a spa-like experience."
Amy Kent and Ryan Martin, Croma Design, Toronto

Folk- and ethnic-inspired pattern will be big in the bathroom
"One trend I see being translated into bathrooms is the idea of 'folk' or using ethnic, global influences. I think we'll see this in trims on hand-sewn trim on towels, 'folkloric' accessories like birds and flowers, or using reclaimed wood furniture for vanities."
Lisa Canning

"Even though it makes me a bit nervous, because I grew up with a multicolour linen closet where not a single towel matched, we're seeing so much pattern in accessories and upholstered furniture, that it's made its way into our all-white bathrooms. So not just solid colours, but colourful pattern with embellishments like trim on towels."

Easy ways to spice up your home this Autumn

"As Autumn approaches and the days get shorter, our focus shifts inside to concentrate on everything to do with our homes. Why not celebrate the time of year and spice up our lives with fresh seasonal trends. Rustic and barren themes from nature set the tone for the collection, while clashing patterns and sumptuous velvets create a bohemian vintage feel.

During Autumn, we want to bring a more toned-down atmosphere to our homes. We want to cuddle up, light candles and stay inside. With the new season, we also long to simplify things with clean lines and a feeling of calm and softness. I’m particularly excited by the new Autumn colours, the imitation leather and suede cushion covers, and the checked linen throw that are among the collection’s key products,” says Evelina Kravaev Söderberg, H&M Home’s Head of Design.

Autumn has a beauty all of its own, prints of falling leaves, and freshly harvested fruits on tablecloths, runners and tea towels bring that feeling into our homes. Rich Autumn shades, such as brown, burgundy and grey, look great on velvet cushions and bedspreads. Cushion covers in black imitation leather create a contrast and breathe life into the styling. Pattern mixes are a recurring theme that boosts that cosy feel, while embroidered and floral curtains add a touch of romance.

COLOURS: Rich autumn colours and shades such as brown and burgundy, alongside soft lavender, sugary sweet cupcake pink and graphic black and white.

KEY TRENDS: Rustic and barren elements from nature as the season turns to Autumn, and a cosy bohemian vintage feel. Nordic minimalism and modern typefaces contrasted with the indulgent fun of cupcakes.

FABRICS: Velvet, lace, broderie anglaise, imitation leather and imitation suede, ecru and washed linen."
